SOCIOLINGUISTIC: Summary of Politeness (Ronald Wardhaugh)

We can show our feelings and awareness toward others through politeness which we use in language.

Janet Holmes in her book An Introduction to Sociolinguistics (1992, p. 296) states that politeness involves taking account of other people’s feeling in order to make themselves feels comfortable.

Politeness itself is socially prescribed. This doesn’t mean that we must be always polite. We may be impolite in several occasion, this act depends on the existence of standards and norms.

When we interact with others we must be aware of both kinds of face and therefore have a choice of two kinds of politeness:
  • Positive politeness leads to achieve solidarity through offers of friendship, the use of compliments, and informal language. Treat others as friends and allies and never threaten their face.
  • Negative politeness leads to deference, apologizing, indirectness, and formality in language we use.

In communication, we are obliged to respect ourselves and the other participant each time we interact with others, we have to carefully show our ‘face’ in order to avoid mini-drama (Goffman: 1955: 1967).

What is ‘face’?

Face according to Brown and Levinson (1987, p. 61) is a public self-image that everyone wants to claim for themselves. There are two kinds of ‘face’, which are positive face and negative face.

·     Positive face is defined as personal desire of a person that their personality is appreciated by their social groups. It leads to the appreciation of individual achievement. For instance, a painter artist such as Van Gogh wants other people’s appreciation of their paintings.

  • On the other hand, negative face describes the basic personal rights and freedom of action in an individual. Someone’s negative face can represent as a threat towards the other individual’s rights such as, not to be interrupted by other while speaking during presentation.

Symmetric pronominal use is a good example of positive politeness and asymmetric T/V use of negative politeness. This approach to politeness has quite revealing when applied to many Western societies. It may also not work so well in other cultures, for example: Javanese.

Some languages seem to have built into them very complex system of politeness.

1. Javanese is a language in which as Geertz (1960, p. 248) says:
“It is nearly impossible to say anything without indicating the social relationship between the speaker and the listener in terms of status and familiarity”

Before one Javanese speaks to another, they must decide on an appropriate speech style: high, middle, or low.

For example: The equivalent to English word now is samenika in high style, saniki in middle style, and saiki in low style.

You can’t freely shift styles, so the choice of saiki will require the speaker to use arep for the verb equivalent to go rather than adjeng or bade, which would be required by the choices of saniki and samenika, respectively.

2. Japanese
The Japanese are also always described as being an extremely polite people.
Martin (1964) has summarized some of the ways in which the Japanese use language to show this politeness: honorific forms incorporating negatives (analogous to English ‘Wouldn’t you like to . . . ?’) are more polite than those without negatives; the longer the utterance the more polite it is felt to be; Martin says that there are four basic factors at work here: in choosing the proper, or polite, address term for another, a Japanese considers out-groupness, social position, age difference, and gender difference in that order

3. French
According to Vigner (p. 88), this French politeness formula is made up of three components: (1) an initial mitigating component (which can be short, e.g., Pouvezvous, or long, e.g., Est-ce que vous voudriez bien) or its absence; (2) the central request or order component; and (3) a final component, the presence or absence of something like s’il vous plaĆ®t.

Politeness is a very important principle in language use; we must consider others’ feelings. The next chapter will again take up the issue of politeness and try to place it in a still broader context

The Characteristic of Slang: Elisa Mattiello (2008)

Mattiello (2008) proposes that there are five types of slang characteristic, these are:

1.    Fresh
Fresh is a distinctive and general characteristic of slang. Slang is often described as a fresh vital vocabulary that keeps the language alive and growing.
Since teenagers and young people in general, tend to be up-to-date and innovative in their speech. Teenagers invent new words and modify the form or meaning of the existing ones. The young are indeed creative and continually in search of novel expressions which show that they are fashionable. (e.g in a mo for “in a moment”, indeedee for “indeed”, for yonks for “a long time”)

2.    Obscenity
Slang with this characteristic uses taboo subjects of a culture. Slang is rich in dirty words and obscenities which are related to sex, especially male and female genitalia (e.g cock, dick, cunt, pussy), sexual intercourse (e.g fuck, screw), sexual stimulation (e.g. wank), and oral sex (e.g suck). Other obscenities are related to either excretion (e.g crap, shit).

3.      Offensiveness
Offensiveness in slang is as derogatory words characterizing certain group of people with negative stereotypes. For example, slang words refer to male or female homosexuality (e.g. fag, lesbo, lezzy) and female promiscuity (e.g slut, slag, tart, cunt).

4.      Faddishness
Slang with faddishness characteristic consists of an eccentric, strange vocabulary, mainly characterized by bizarre metaphors stated by Allen, 1998 cited in Mattiello (2008). The examples below were taken from book “Introduction to English Slang” by Mattiello (2008):
-          Bird and chick for a girl; young woman
-          Fairy and pansy bizarrely refer to a male homosexual.
Mattiello also added that faddishness characterizes irony (e.g. bitching, killer) for having positive senses of “excellent”.

5.      Musicality
Slang with this characteristic has typical tendency of slang to play with sounds or may display onomatopoeia. Musicality may be obtained by way of reduplicative formation or rhyming phrases. The examples below were taken from book “Introduction to English Slang” by Mattiello (2008):
-          Hotsy-totsy means “comfortable, satisfactory”
-          Gang-bang means “sexual orgy”
-          Humping and pumping means “having sexual intercourse”
-          Shitty brickitty from shit a brick for expressing surprise or amazement.
An additional source of musicality is onomatopoeia, as in the word blabbermouth indicating ‘one who blabs; tell-tale’ that evokes the sound one produce when ‘blabbing’.

KPU reopens polling station in Sydney

The General Elections Commission (KPU) said it will extend voting day in Sydney this weekend although local organizers have been unable to identify the names of eligible voters who were prevented from voting on April 13.
“The local Overseas Elections Committee [PPLN] and Elections Supervisory Committee [Panwaslu] have agreed to the extension. It will probably be held on Saturday or Sunday,” KPU head Arief Budiman said on Friday.
Hundreds of people were denied the right to vote at the Sydney Town Hall on April 13 because the PPLN closed the polling station at 6 p.m. as per KPU regulations.
As of Thursday, more than 49,000 people have signed a petition on change.org demanding a revote.
While the local Panwaslu and Elections Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) have recommended an extension, the KPU ordered local organizers to draw up a list of voters who were unable to cast their ballots, which is a hard thing to do because organizers did not keep track of the queueing voters.
Arief said the list request was later dropped.
The KPU said a revote or extended voting could still be held until Saturday or 10 days after election day on April 17.

Twitter Wants You to Help Shape the Future Design of Its App

By Trevor Mogg — Posted on March 11, 2019 10:00PM PST
    From: https://www.digitaltrends.com/social-media/twitter-wants-you-to-help-it-shape-the-future-design-of-the-app/

Twitter is launching an app for testing new conversation features, and it wants you to get involved.

The experimental app is called Twttr (that’s Twitter’s original name, incidentally), and anyone with a Twitter account can apply to use it. If accepted, you’ll receive a notification in the next few days.

Participants will get to try various design features aimed at making the social media service easier to use. The company wants honest feedback about the tests, meaning that your opinions could shape the future look of the main Twitter app. Initial tests are expected to focus on making it easier to read and follow a Twitter thread.

“Twitter is exploring new ways to make the conversations you care about easier to read, understand, and join,” the company says on the application page.

So, for example, tweets in a thread could appear inside rounded bubbles that resemble those seen in messaging apps. The bubbles may appear with different colors to make it easier to identify tweets from the original tweeter, or those you follow. According to TechCrunch, tweets may also be indented, which might make conversations easier to follow. A cleaner interface could be tested, too, with information such as engagements and sharing options removed from view.

If you’re given access to Twttr, you’ll be expected to use it as your primary Twitter app, so be prepared for frustrations along the way. Why? Because, as Twitter points out, you’ll be trying a version of the service that is “very much a work in progress,” and therefore “bugs are expected, and things will change quickly.”

It adds that the test builds “will not always have all the same functionality you’re used to, and you’ll see some things appear — and maybe disappear,” presumably without any warning.

Besides sending feedback directly to Twitter, participants in the tests are also encouraged to share their experiences and to tweet screenshots of tested features on the main app, which should help the company to gauge opinion from a broader base of users if discussions take off on the main platform.

It’s worth noting that many of the features may never see the light of day. That’s the whole point of Twttr. The app will help developers learn about what works and what doesn’t, and save it from testing potentially disruptive features with regular users who’d rather not have their Twitter experience disturbed.
